Fiction Uncovered secures funding for two years

Fiction Uncovered announced on Friday 11th November 2011 that it will receive funding for two years from Grants for the Arts, supported by Arts Council England and funded by the National Lottery. The funding will assure that the promotion can run through to summer 2013.

The Fiction Uncovered promotion pledges to support those writers who deserve recognition but have yet to receive a major literary prize or media attention, or be picked for retailer promotions, and creates an annual opportunity for eight fiction writers (novels, short stories, graphic novels) in the UK to be part of a major promotion supported by retailers, and a major publicity and marketing campaign.

The 2011 promotion saw retail partnerships with Waterstone’s, Foyles, iBookstore, Amazon and The Book Depository, as well as partnership with The Reading Agency to reach libraries and reading groups, and with Lovereading UK to reach dedicated readers. Fiction Uncovered events took place at Shoreditch House Literary Salon, The Book Stops Here, Latitude Festival, Off The Shelf Blacks Soho, as well as Fiction Uncovered authors taking part in other festivals around the country.

The eight titles selected for the Fiction Uncovered 2011 promotion were:

• The Water Theatre by Lindsay Clarke (Alma Books)
• The London Satyr by Robert Edric (Doubleday, Transworld)
• Proof of Love by Catherine Hall (Portobello)
• Night Waking by Sarah Moss (Granta)
• Nimrod’s Shadow by Chris Paling (Portobello)
• Disputed Land by Tim Pears (William Heinemann, Random House)
• Forgetting Zoë by Ray Robinson (William Heinemann, Random House)
• The English German Girl by Jake Wallis Simons (Birlinn, Polygon)

The Chair of Judges for Fiction Uncovered 2011 was the writer and Giles Foden. He was joined by Damian Barr (author, playwright, journalist and host of the Soho House Literary Salon), Simon Burke (Fiction Buying Manager, Waterstone’s) and Sarah Crown (Literary Editor, Guardian Online). The judging panel for 2012 will be announced later on this month.

The ‘Fiction Uncovered’ promotion came about after a period of discussions between Arts Council England, a group of publishers, literary agents and other book professionals about how to help UK fiction writers find wider audiences.

For the 2012 promotion, Fiction Uncovered is delighted to announced new steering group members – they are:

• Ruth Harrison, The Reading Agency
