Fiction Uncovered announces today (Wednesday 18 January 2012) its 2012 judging panel. The eight titles for the second annual Fiction Uncovered promotion will be selected by a judging panel chaired by John Sutherland, Lord Northcliffe Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at UCL. The 2012 judging panel will include Katy Guest (Literary Editor, The Independent on Sunday), Jasper Sutcliffe (Head of Buying, Foyles Group) and Matt Thorne (writer and Head of Creative Writing at Brunel University).
John Sutherland is Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature at UCL. He has chaired, or judged a number of literary competitions: the Booker Prize (judge, 2000), the Man Booker for Fiction (Chair 2005), the Encore Award for Best Second Novel and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. He has published widely on fiction: his latest book is Lives of the Novelists: A History of Fiction in 294 Lives (Profile UK, 2011, Yale University Press, 2012).
Katy Guest has been the literary editor of the Independent on Sunday for two and half years. Before that she worked as the deputy literary editor of The Independent, and as a feature writer and diarist for both papers. Having graduated with an English degree from New Hall, Cambridge, in 1997, she worked briefly for a local publisher, The Lutterworth Press.
Jasper Sutcliffe has worked at Foyles for the past twelve years starting as a bookseller in the Fiction department at Charing Cross Road, then to Fiction Manager, then Senior Buyer and is currently Head of Buying for the Foyles group. He has previously acted on the judging panels of the RNA book awards and the Tibor Jones Page Turner awards.
Matt Thorne is the author of six novels, including Eight Minutes Idle, which won an Encore Award, and Cherry, which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. He has also written three children’s books and co-edited two anthologies, All Hail the New Puritans and Croatian Nights. He recently co-wrote the screenplay for the adaptation for his novel Eight Minutes Idle, which will be released in 2012. He is currently working on a critical study of the pop star Prince for Faber & Faber (published October 2012) and is Head of Creative Writing at Brunel University.
Submissions for Fiction Uncovered 2012 are now closed and the judges now have the arduous task of getting down to the list of eight titles which will go through to promotions around the UK this summer.
