Fiction Uncovered announces pop-up shop in conjunction with The Book Barge

Fiction Uncovered announces today that it will be launching a summer 2012 pop-up bookshop on the floating indie retailer The Book Barge.

The eight titles will be announced on 23 May 2012 and during the summer of 2012 the Fiction Uncovered/Book Barge shop will be popping up at waterfront locations selling all the titles selected for this year’s Fiction Uncovered promotion as well as titles from the 2011 selection.

Authors selected for the Fiction Uncovered promotion this summer will be invited to read at special events and signings on The Book Barge and at other festivals and events around the UK.

The Fiction Uncovered promotion each year celebrates eight British fiction writers (novels, short stories, graphic novels) who go through to a major promotion supported by retailers, and a major publicity and marketing campaign.

The eight titles for the second annual Fiction Uncovered promotion will be selected by a judging panel chaired by John Sutherland the Lord Northcliffe emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at UCL. The 2012 judging panel will include Katy Guest (Literary Editor, The Independent on Sunday), Jasper Sutcliffe (Head of Buying, Foyles Group) and the writer Matt Thorne.

The Book Barge bookshop comprises a mix of new and secondhand fiction that tries to reflect the very best of contemporary, classic and children’s literature. The floating store is based on a converted 57′ narrowboat and is normally moored near Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Sarah Henshaw, owner of The Book Barge, said today:

“We’re thrilled to be taking Fiction Uncovered on tour with us this year. There are so many great British writers to celebrate and we’re on board to help bring the Fiction Uncovered selection to readers around the country!”

Fiction Uncovered 2011 saw retail partnerships with Waterstone’s, Foyles, iBookstore, Amazon and The Book Depository, as well as partnership with The Reading Agency to reach libraries and reading groups, and with Lovereading UK to reach dedicated readers. Fiction Uncovered events took place at Shoreditch House Literary Salon, The Book Stops Here, Literary Death Match, Latitude Festival, Off The Shelf Blacks Soho, as well as Fiction Uncovered authors taking part in other festivals around the country.

In 2012 Fiction Uncovered is engaging heavily with independent bookshops such as The Book Barge and has hired Matthew Crockatt to build relationships with independent retailers across the UK. Crockatt has many years of independent retailing experience working at the Pan Bookshop, Daunt Books and as co-owner of Crockatt & Powell. Fiction Uncovered acknowledges independent bookshops as vital to the process of leading readers to excellent books, often before they have received mainstream recognition. Fiction Uncovered is therefore joining forces with independent retailers in 2012 to bring as much attention to Great British fiction as possible this summer and beyond.

Sophie Rochester, Director for Fiction Uncovered, said today:

“We’re delighted to be working with The Book Barge in bringing the Fiction Uncovered titles to readers across the country in this unique way. The Book Barge is a beautiful bookshop which already supports the best contemporary fiction so this was a perfect fit for the Fiction Uncovered promotion. We’re also delighted to have Matthew Crockatt working with us this year. Having worked as an independent retailer for so many years his experience is proving invaluable in our pledge to work with indies this year.”

Additional dates of where The Book Barge will be appearing during summer 2012 will be updated here on the Fiction Uncovered site and The Book Barge websites.
