Arvon launches new writers retreat at its Shropshire Centre

The hurst clockhouse retreatArvon, renowned for its unique residential creative writings courses, is opening a dedicated writers’ retreat facility at its Shropshire centre.

The Clockhouse, a converted 19th century building in the grounds of The Hurst, has been carefully refurbished to provide four self-contained apartments for writers, each with bedroom, study-lounge and bathroom. The Writers Retreat at The Clockhouse is aimed at writers who are looking for time to focus on their writing, away from day-to-day distractions, with all food provided.

Six day (Tuesday to Monday) and long weekend Writers Retreats (Friday to Monday) are available, and writers can also book multiple retreats together for a longer stay.   This is the first time that Arvon has been able to offer a space dedicated purely to writers retreat.

The Hurst, situated near the village of Clun in the Shropshire Hills, is the former home of playwright John Osborne, and is one of three Arvon writers’ centres in England.

Ruth Borthwick, Chief Executive of Arvon said, “We’ve been listening to writers who tell us that they would value time away from home on retreat at Arvon, in purpose-built space, with more choice of length of stay. In our renovation of The Clockhouse, our aim is to provide a haven for authors to pursue projects away from the hurly-burly.”

The Clockhouse will open for retreats on 10 May 2016. Bookings are now open for May – September 2016.

Facilities include:

  • four comfortable self-contained apartments, each with bedroom, study and en-suite bathroom
  • shared lounge with log-burner
  • shared kitchen-diner with all food provided—local produce and locally home-cooked meals
  • 26 acres of woodland, a spring-fed lake, inspiring views of the Shropshire Hills
  • easy walks to the local village with pub and shops
  • wheelchair accessibility throughout the building
  • Wi-Fi

Six day Writers Retreat: £600
